The Challenge
The Meridian Estate — a 7,200 sq ft home in River Oaks — had an outdated halogen outdoor lighting system that consumed significant power, required frequent lamp replacements, and could not be controlled from anything other than physical switches at the breaker panel. The homeowners wanted a full system replacement with smart automation, consistent color temperature, and the ability to control zones individually from their phones.
The Approach
The local Houston partner replaced all 147 existing halogen fixtures with LED equivalents matched to a consistent 2700K color temperature, restoring the warmth of the original system while dramatically reducing energy consumption. Conduit was already in place from the prior installation, minimizing disruption.
A Lutron RadioRA 3 system was installed as the control backbone, with a dedicated outdoor panel managing 9 zones. The system was integrated with the property's Crestron home automation platform, allowing all outdoor zones to be controlled through the existing touchscreens and mobile apps in use throughout the residence.
Automation scenes were programmed for four standard modes — arrival, entertaining, security, and overnight — with seasonal adjustments to align with sunset times across the calendar year.
The Outcome
A Property Transformed After Dark
Energy consumption for outdoor lighting was reduced by 74% from the prior halogen system. The homeowners — who travel frequently — reported that the security and arrival scenes alone justified the investment. The property is now routinely cited in the neighborhood for its nighttime curb presence.
