The Challenge
Casa Verano is a contemporary home on a steeply graded hillside lot in West Lake Hills. The backyard — while architecturally striking — was entirely unused after sunset due to the absence of any outdoor lighting. The terrain, with 18 feet of grade change from house to pool deck, required careful fixture placement to prevent glare into neighbor sight lines while maintaining safety on the hillside path.
The Approach
The local Austin partner began by mapping the grade changes and identifying sight line concerns before any design was presented. The hillside path required fixtures flush-mounted at grade level — projecting light horizontally rather than upward — to avoid glare while maintaining a minimum foot-candle level for safe navigation.
Pool and spa lighting used color-selectable LED fixtures, allowing the homeowners to set static white for everyday use and color scenes for entertaining. The covered patio received a mix of recessed downlights and low-profile hanging pendants over the outdoor dining area.
All outdoor kitchen zones were treated as task lighting, with directional fixtures over cooking surfaces and warmer ambient fixtures for the seating area. The entire system runs on a single low-voltage panel with manual override and a timer-based schedule.
The Outcome
A Property Transformed After Dark
The homeowners now describe their backyard as their primary entertaining space year-round. The hillside path — previously navigated only in daylight — became a naturally lit descent to the pool deck that guests frequently compliment. The project was completed without disruption to the existing landscape or pool equipment.
